Permit

Permit are available year round in the Lower Keys, although typically the season runs from February to November. The Permit fishery in the Lower Keys is the best in the world. Permit feed on crab and shrimp on the flats. They can tolerate both cooler and warmer water temperatures than bonefish and therefore forage on the flats longer into the winter and through the heat of the summer. Permit are probably the hardest species to catch on a fly, but can't resist a well placed live crab. When hooked, Permit go on long strong runs. Permit average from ten to forty pound. The state record in fifty-one and a half pounds.
